PAG and Arizona Project WET Team Up to Keep Tucson’s Stormwater Clean

Sept. 25, 2014

When it rains in Tucson, rainwater flows off yards, parking lots and streets into storm drains and desert washes. Pima Association of Governments’ (PAG) “Clean Water Starts With Me!” outreach campaign arrives in Tucson each monsoon season, spreading the message that we can all help maintain healthy, pollutant-free stormwater in our community.

This year, through a new partnership with the University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center’s Arizona Project WET (APW) program, PAG is supporting APW teacher workshops and student water festivals to help educate Tucson’s children about our most precious resource: Water.

By working together, we can help keep our neighborhoods and washes clean of stormwater pollutants. The campaign not only helps local jurisdictions meet state and federal regulatory requirements for stormwater quality, but also develops community partnerships like the one with APW to help make a difference.

APW programs have targeted objectives that are measured through pre- and post-program questionnaires and participant surveys. PAG works to prevent pollution through targeted education programs and outreach, while APW promotes responsible water stewardship through K-12-oriented programs. Together, PAG and APW are reaching more students and teachers across Pima County through education that increases knowledge and understanding of watershed protection.

APW seeks teacher contacts and volunteers within PAG’s jurisdiction. PAG seeks online survey participants to assess the area’s needs at pagregion.com.  Please contact us to find out more: APW’s Kerry Schwartz, kschwart@cals.arizona.edu or PAG’s Mead Mier, MMier@pagnet.org
