In January, WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal will be the first speaker featured in a three-part lecture series entitled Running on Empty – Facing Water Scarcity across the Southwest, presented by Kol Ami Synagogue’s Dayenu Circle. Mike Crimmins, a climate scientist in the U of A’s Department of Soil, Water, and Environmental Science, and Chairman Austin Nuñez of the San Xavier District in the Tohono O’odham Nation will also speak during this series focused on Arizona’s water future.
These presentations will explain how water situations differ across Arizona, the Tucson region, and rural communities experiencing population growth and increasing economic activity, coupled with reduced Colorado River water flows and groundwater overdraft. The series will also explore innovation in water policies and management and the roles that individuals and organizations play in applying water solutions.
Director Megdal’s presentation, to be held Tuesday, January 13, 2026, will focus on “The Future of Water in Southern Arizona – Issues, Innovation, and Impact.” She will examine the critical water issues facing Southern Arizona and why community-wide dialogue is essential to protect our region’s long-term water security. Crimmins will speak in Part 2 of the series on Tuesday, February 10, followed by Part 3 presented by Nuñez on Tuesday, March 10. There is no cost to attend these lectures. Save the dates!
